Coronavirus vaccine

More than one and a half million people in Wales have now received their first coronavirus vaccine dose.

Latest figures published by Public Health Wales show 1,502,641 people have received their first vaccine dose, while a further 475,570 people have received two doses of the vaccine.

The figures were published on Wednesday (April 7) and are accurate as of Tuesday (April 6).

Meanwhile, the coronavirus vaccine produced by American firm Moderna is now in use in Wales

The Moderna vaccine was approved for use in the UK back in January and is being rolled out in Carmarthen to begin with.

This means there are now three brands of vaccines in use across Wales, including the vaccine produced by Pfizer-BioNTech and the one produced by Oxford-AstraZeneca.

Wales’ Health Minister Vaughan Gething described it as “another key milestone in our fight against the Covid-19 pandemic” and said: “A third vaccine for use in Wales significantly adds to our defences in the face of coronavirus and will help to protect our most vulnerable.“

The Welsh Government has said everyone in the first nine priority groups has now been offered a coronavirus vaccine, but urged anyone yet to be vaccinated within those priority groups to contact their local health board, which for Caerphilly County Borough residents is the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.

The Welsh Government has pledged that everyone else who is eligible for a vaccine will have been offered one by July 31, providing there are no issues with vaccine supply.
