A big sister has raised more than £3,200 to thank the hospital that cared for her baby brother while he underwent life-changing surgery on his skull.

Carey Neale, 15, from Bedwas, ran 48 miles in the space of 48 hours to raise money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital – where her one-year-old brother Leo had his successful operation.

When Leo was just eight months old, he was diagnosed with a rare condition called craniosynostosis, which meant his skull hadn’t developed properly.

As a result, Leo’s skull had to be taken apart and pieced back together by surgeons.

During Leo’s five-day stay in hospital, Carey made daily video calls to see how her little brother was getting on.

Their mother, Leanne, and Leo’s father, Sam, were given accommodation in Birmingham so they could be close to Leo while he had his operation.

Determined to show her appreciation to the hospital and its staff, Carey took part in a gruelling challenge – running four miles, 12 times over the course of 48 hours to raise money for the hospital.

Carey said: “We were all really worried when Leo went to hospital, but when I could see how well he was doing after his operation, it made me want to do something to say thank you to all the staff who looked after him.

“I wanted to do something really big and push myself – so the 4x4x48 challenge was perfect.

“By the middle of the second day, I started to feel really drained, but thinking about the hospital, and all of the poorly children who go through so much, really spurred me on.

“I even managed to push Leo over the finish line in his pushchair.”

During lockdown, Carey developed a passion for running, and was joined by her own father, Scott, for company and support during the 48-hour challenge.

Miranda Williams, Head of Public Fundraising at Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity, said: “Having a sibling in hospital can be an extremely anxious and unsettling time, especially when they’re so far away, but we’re so glad Carey got to see Leo’s face as he recovered, and grateful that the experience inspired such an incredible challenge.

“We’re in awe of Carey’s determination and willpower.

“The funds she’s raised will go towards helping us do more for sick kids, just like Leo, and their families.”
