Trinity Fields School submitted this video as part of its competition entry

Trinity Fields School has won a Wales-wide environmental competition – earning the right to represent Wales on the global stage.

The Ystrad Mynach-based school, which is for children with Additional Learning Needs (ALN), came out on top in the Young Reporters Environment Competition in Wales.

As part of the competition, pupils had to work on a project covering the dangers of plastic litter and come up with ideas to address the issue.

Entrants had to create a video no more than three minutes long to discuss their work and ideas.

The school won the best video in the 11-14 age group category.

An email confirming the school’s win read: “The judges thought that your video stood out as it celebrated whole school participation, and expressed an important message in a clear and creative way.”

Trinity Fields-inspired police scheme rolled out across Wales

The video will now be entered into the International Young Reporters for the Environment Competition, which will be judged in June.

The school will be up against entries from young people from across the world.

The aim of the competition is to encourage young people to engage with efforts to resolve environmental issues.

Ian Elliott MBE, Headteacher of Trinity Fields School, said he was “delighted” with the win.

He said: “If you get to see the video entry, you will immediately see pupils’ enthusiasm and commitment to reducing the amount of plastic waste. They have a very clear understanding of how to protect their environment so that we protect it for future generations.

“A huge thank you to the pupils who starred in the video and to Kate Thomas, team leader in our School Curriculum Phase department, who leads this very important area of our work.

“Good luck for the International finals.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Ross Whiting, congratulated the school.

He said: “It’s great to see the passion of the pupils when it concerns reducing plastic and protecting our environment.

“I wish you all the best of luck in the International Competition and eagerly await the results.”
