An Oakdale resident has been named as the new District Governor of Rotary in Southern Wales.

Ray Bevan, who is a member of Pontllanfraith Rotary Club, will lead the district until June 2022.

Mr Bevan is a retired secondary school teacher and GCSE examiner, and a former member of the Glamorgan Youth Orchestra, where he played a key role in Rotary’s Young Musician competition.

He joined Rotary 11 years ago and said it has “opened up a whole new world” for him.

As leader of the South Wales district, Mr Bevan’s two main focuses will be on supporting young people and environmental causes.

He said: “I would like to see us seek out and find ways of working more closely with and not just for our communities.  I would also like to see much more collaborative work on joint projects with other volunteer groups.”

What is Rotary?

Rotary is a global organisation with more than 1.2million members across 200 countries. Across the UK and the Republic of Ireland, it has around 45,000 members in more than 1,700 clubs.

Rotary Club members get together in their spare time to raise money for a variety of charitable causes.

There are two Rotary clubs based in Caerphilly County Borough – one in Pontllanfraith and the other in Blackwood.

Both of these clubs are part of the Rotary in Southern Wales district. The district aims to support the clubs within its area and help them develop.
