A supermarket in Pontllanfraith has teamed up with a charity to support families of children and young adults with undiagnosed genetic conditions.

The Sainsbury’s store will be donating food parcels to the charity SWAN UK (Syndromes without a name), which will be delivered to the local families the charity works with.

Unsold food and other perishable goods, such as flowers, will be collected before their sell-by date by Claire Swan of SWAN UK, who will distribute them amongst local families.

Ms Swan said: “Families would like to say how happy they are to be added as a partnership with Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith.

“SWAN UK is the only dedicated support network available for families of children and young adults with undiagnosed genetic conditions in the UK. This partnership will help families and also help raise awareness of SWAN UK and the wonderful things they do.

“Finally I would like to thank Sainsbury’s Pontllanfraith for all the kindness and generosity shown so far.”

Store manager Sam Faircloth said: “I am really pleased we are able to support our local community through SWAN UK. This supports our sustainability initiative ‘Plan For Better’, as we strive to support our local communities through such partnerships.”

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the store has also been supporting a number of foodbanks, including the Salvation Army Risca Foodbank and Rhymney Valley Foodbank.

The store is also supporting the Ty Croeso hostel at the Wallich, Newbridge, as well as the United Welsh-run Ty’r Fesen in Caerphilly town, which provides short-term accommodation for people experiencing homelessness.

The supermarket also has in-store donation points supporting Hope Rescue – a charity which helps stray and abandoned dogs in south Wales.
