Around 2,700 children and young people would no longer be advised to shield if coronavirus shielding advice is ever reintroduced in Wales.

The changes affect all young people who are classed as extremely clinically vulnerable.

Wales’ Health Minister, Eluned Morgan, made the announcement on Wednesday, August 25.

The decision was made after it was recommended by the Chief Medical Officers for Wales, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Everyone affected by these changes will receive a letter from Wales’ Chief Medical Officer, Dr Frank Atherton, explaining the changes and offering advice on how to minimise the risk of catching coronavirus.

Currently, some young people aged between 12 and 15, who have certain health issues or live with others who are immunosuppressed, will continue to be vaccinated in line with current advice.

A UK-Government commissioned study into the effects of coronavirus on children and young people found that this age group, including those deemed extremely clinically vulnerable, were at a low risk of becoming seriously unwell or dying.

Health Minister Mrs Morgan said data had been carefully looked at, and added: “Children and young people have been severely affected by the pandemic, with many missing school and meeting family and friends.

“The change to the shielding patient list will ensure that only people who really need to follow this advice stay on the list.

“We are still learning about the impacts of coronavirus infection, including Long Covid, and I encourage everyone in Wales to continue to do all they can to minimise the risk of catching the virus and help keep Wales and their loved ones safe.”
