A scarecrow competition was held at Pencoed Fach Organic Farm between Cefn Fforest and Aberbargoed last week.

In total, 27 hand-made scarecrows were entered into the competition.

David Davies, a fifth generation farmer at Pencoed Fach, told Caerphilly Observer: “We wanted to get the community involved and to feel a part of something, as well as to give to the kids something to do.

“We posted details of the competition on our Facebook page on Thursday, August 12, and asked for entries by Monday, August 16.

“It was short notice, but we were very impressed with the quality.

“Entrants were all different ages and there was a lot of effort put into it.

“People loved it. It’s definitely something we will do again.”

The competition coincided with the farm’s sunflower event, where visitors can see sunflowers, go for a ride in a tractor and more.

Blackwood councillor Andrew Farina-Childs was chosen to be the judge in the scarecrow competition – which was won by six-year-old George’s entry.

Cllr Farina-Childs thanked Mr Davies for inviting him to judge the entries and said: “It was great to see so many people at the competition.

“The standard of entrants was amazing.”

He added: “The efforts that everyone put in to making the scarecrows made the selection of the winners an extremely difficult one.

“Congratulations to all who took part and well done to the winners.”

In previous years, the farm has held pumpkin exhibitions in the run-up to Halloween, with as many as 10,000 pumpkins growing on the site.
