Tributes have been paid to former Caerphilly RFC second-row Paul Jones, who has died aged 49.

Jones played in Caerphilly’s 2002/03 European Shield campaign, where the side reached the final but were beaten by French side Castres Olympique in Reading.

Jones, who was originally from Bridgend, also played for Llanelli, Newport and Leeds, as well as the Wales B side.

Caerphilly RFC paid tribute to Jones, who was nicknamed ‘Stretch’, describing him as a “well-liked, talented and influential player”.

The Scarlets region also paid tribute to Jones and said: “We are saddened to learn that our former player Paul Jones has passed away.

“Paul played 74 matches between 1992 and 1996 and started against the ’94 Springboks at Stradey Park.

“Our thoughts are with family and friends at this time.”

Former referee James Jones also expressed sadness at Jones’ passing and said: “Stretch you were a great man taken too soon. Rest easy big man.

“Thoughts and prayers with all the family and close friends.”

Former Wales scrum-half Rupert Moon tweeted: “Such a sad loss. Far too young. Thoughts are with his family and friends.”
