Year 7 pupils are being given free access to all leisure and sport facilities in Caerphilly County Borough.

The council’s ‘Year 7 Active’ initiative includes free access to swimming, fitness suites, classes and racquet sports.

Paid for by funding from Sport Wales, the scheme aims to increase physical activity levels for children at an age where drop out rates are high – according to the council.

In a statement to Caerphilly Observer, a council spokesperson said: “Children making the transition into adolescent go through huge physical, mental and emotional changes and drop-off rates in inactivity accelerate in this age group.

“The inactivity which establishes itself in adolescence continues into adulthood. The initiative is focused on increasing physical activity levels and reducing the drop off rate but also, reinforcing new habits which will keep them active throughout their lives.”

Forms for Year 7 pupils will be distributed through their school. Year 7 pupils who live inside the County Borough, but attend a comprehensive school in another area, can get a membership form from their local leisure centre.
