The Welsh Government will become a ‘super sponsor’ for refugees coming from Ukraine, it has announced.

There has already been 10,000 expressions of interest from people wanting to be a sponsor and host those fleeing from the Russia-invaded country.

The UK Government is offering £350 per month for 12 months for each family supported by sponsors.

The Homes for Ukraine scheme will see people from Ukraine, who don’t have existing family connections, obtain a visa to come to the UK for up to three years.

By becoming a ‘super sponsor’, the Welsh Government hopes to get refugees into temporary accommodation in Wales quicker and then work to provide longer-term housing.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said: “We want Wales to be a Nation of Sanctuary, and we’ll continue to do everything we can to make sure there is a warm welcome waiting in Wales.”

Mr Drakeford has previously announced that Ukrainian refugees can travel on Transport for Wales services for free for six months after they arrive.

Jane Hutt, Minister for Social Justice, added: “As part of our role as a super sponsor, we have been working intensely with local government in Wales; with the third sector and with wider public services to ensure all the support refugees need when they arrive in Wales are available. This includes support for people suffering trauma and ill health as a direct result of the conflict.

“We will also be able to sponsor people directly and people arriving via this route will be directed to one of the welcome centres, which are being set up across Wales before going on to medium and longer-term accommodation. This model is based on the success of the Afghan and Syrian resettlement schemes.”

Scotland has also launched a similar ‘super sponsor’ scheme.

The UK Government’s Secretary of State for Wales Simon Hart praised the 10,000 expressions of interest.

He said: “Wales has a long and proud history of supporting refugees and the response of people across the country to help those fleeing the invasion of Ukraine has been remarkable.

“With more than 10,000 Welsh expressions of interest so far to provide housing and support through the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme, people across Wales are displaying extraordinary generosity towards those facing the most appalling and difficult circumstances. I thank everyone who has come forward to help.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council pledges support

Caerphilly County Borough Council has pledged its commitment to support the people of Ukraine.

A Notice of Motion, proposed by council leader Cllr Philippa Marsden, was agreed during a full council meeting on March 16.

The Motion sets out the Council’s commitment to:

  • Recognise the suffering and resolve of the people of Ukraine, and those with close links to Ukraine.
  • Condemns the unprovoked and unacceptable military attack against Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Belarus.
  • Offers support if needed, through existing Council services, to all those who have family members in Ukraine and affected areas.
  • Welcome the Welsh Government’s commitment to accept refugees from Ukraine, and resolves to accept and support refugees within the county borough.
  • Urge the UK Government to show compassion by waiving visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens seeking refuge from the military conflict.

Cllr Marsden said: “The ongoing military attack against Ukraine by the Russian Federation and Belarus has caused shock and concern around the world. It has undermined world peace and represents a fundamental attack on democratic ideals and values.

“This war, like all wars, will cause disproportionate harm, fear and suffering to civilians. This Motion sets out Caerphilly’s clear commitment to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and to offer our support to those affected by the atrocities currently taking place.”
