In 2018, Angelina Mitchell first moved to Wales. Now, she has been awarded for her Welsh language skills.
Originally from Groningen in the Netherlands, Angelina, 28, moved to Scotland in 2017 before settling in Wales a year later with her husband – a fluent Welsh speaker from Pwllheli, Gwynedd.
Angelina, who works for education and training firm ACT in Caerphilly, was named Work Welsh Learner of the Year at the National Work Welsh Awards 2022.
The awards are run by the National Centre for Learning Welsh, which is an independent body funded by the Welsh Government. It is responsible for Welsh language learning in Wales.
Angelina said: “I’m very happy to win this award. I love learning languages in general, as I can speak five other languages as well.
“I also love seeing people’s reaction when I start speaking Welsh. They always seem very happy and proud that a Dutch girl like me puts in the effort to learn their language.”
As well as Welsh, Angelina can also speak English, French, German and her native Dutch, as well as Dutch Low Saxon – a dialect found in north eastern Netherlands.
As an intermediate Welsh learner, she attends Welsh classes twice a week, doing courses with Dysgu Cymraeg and Nant Gwrtheyrn.
She said: “These tutors are great and you’ll meet some amazing people with a similar passion – the Welsh language.”
