Two brothers who ran the Manhattan Kitchen takeaway in Caerphilly have been jailed for their part in hiding the murder of their sister-in-law.

Yasin Salangi, 33, and Ramin Salangi, 31, both of Adamscroft Place, Cardiff, were found guilty of helping older brother Nezam Salangy cover-up his killing of wife Zobaidah.

Salangy, 44, of Austin Road, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, who spells his name differently, had reported his 28-year-old wife missing. However, a police investigation discovered he had murdered her and, with the help of his brothers, buried her body in woodland.

During the seven-week trial, which ended in May, Worcester Crown Court heard that Salangy and his wife were in an unhappy marriage.

On March 27, 2020, they had an argument, part of which was recorded, and the following day she disappeared.

Salangy told a number of people that she had left him, even showing messages from her phone which he had sent to himself saying that she was going back to Afghanistan.

The reality was that on March 28, at the couple’s pizza business in Bromsgrove, Salangy had killed his wife.

He contacted his two brothers who travelled from their home in Cardiff to help him dispose of her body.

She was buried, bound and wrapped in a duvet cover and bin bags in a wooded area near Copyholt Lane, Lower Bentley, Worcestershire.

On April 1 Salangy reported his wife missing but a few days later the police response turned into a murder investigation and the three men were arrested.

Police discovered the body six months later. It was so decomposed a cause of death could not be established.

All three were sentenced at Worcester Crown Court on June 23.

Yasin was sentenced to four years and nine months in prison, while brother Ramin was sentenced to six years.

Yasin is listed as the leaseholder of Manhattan Kitchen, in Pentrebane Street, and according to Companies House, Ramin is the owner of the company Best Manhattan Kitchen Ltd.

Their older brother was given a life sentence with a minimum term of 18 years.

Following the sentencing, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Peters, of West Mercia Police, said: “Nezam Salangy committed a horrific crime, brutally murdering his wife and burying her body to try to cover up his actions and I am glad that he will now pay the price for that and spend the next 18 years in prison.

“Yasin and Ramin Salangi knew they were doing wrong helping their brother and they too have been served the justice they deserve.

“The other victims in this case are the children who have now lost both parents and my thoughts are with them and wider family members.”

The court was told how all three brothers had fled the Taliban in Afghanistan in the early 2000s. Ramin previously worked as a camp security guard for the Allied Forces while Yasin was an interpreter for US and British forces.

The court also heard how Ramin and Yasin suffer with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from their violent experiences with the Taliban.

Judge Hilliard said the two brothers had a “misguided loyalty” to Nezam.
