Around 100 fish have been killed in the Nant yr Aber river in Caerphilly, sparking an investigation from Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

Trout, salmon, grayling and bullheads are among the fish killed.

NRW officers visited the river on Tuesday, August 30 after receiving reports of discolouration affecting around a mile of the river.

Samples of the polluted water have been taken by NRW officers and are being analysed.

Kirsty Lewis, Senior Environment officer for NRW said the fish deaths will have “a significant impact on local fish stocks”.

Ms Lewis continued: “We believe we have found the source and we’ll consider what action to take next, including any appropriate enforcement action to be taken against those responsible.

“We’re grateful to those who reported this incident to us. We would encourage anyone to report signs of pollution to us on 0300 065 3000, or via our website to ensure we can respond as swiftly as possible.”

Councillor Shayne Cook, who represents the Morgan Jones ward where the pollution has been found, said he was “shocked” at the pollution and said: “The knock-on effects to the ecosystem in that area will be felt for some time.

“I have spoken with officers from NRW to try and identify the cause and I will assist where possible.”
