Councillors want to extend the amount of time that residents can park and allow them to park in waiting bays.

Caerphilly county borough residents’ parking permits are to be reviewed as the current scheme does not provide “adequate parking”.

Currently, the residents parking permit is Monday to Saturday from 8am – 6pm.

In December 2020, Labour councillors Adrian Hussey, of Newbridge, and Tudor Davies, of Aberbargoed and Bargoed, requested that the existing policy – which hasn’t been reviewed since 2012 – be amended.

A consultation on the change in parking permits will take place as part of the review. It will involve reaching out to 1,844 residents in the county borough.

At an environment and sustainability scrutiny committee meeting, held on Thursday, October 6, it was agreed that a task and finish group should be set up to address the issues.

Any policy changes recommended by the task and finish group would be reported to the council’s cabinet.

It can take two years to get a disabled parking bay, but no-one can explain why it takes so long

At the meeting, St Martin’s ward councillor Stephen Kent, of Plaid Cymru, said he receives at least two emails a week from residents about issues with parking permits.

Cllr Kent pushed for the policy changes to be implemented soon.

The council’s principal engineer, Dean Smith, said: “We are doing everything we can to do these changes as quickly as we can.”

But Mr Smith added that the department was struggling to recruit – which is slowing the process. It currently has two full-time positions advertised.
