Roadworks which caused school run gridlock yesterday afternoon in Penyrheol were caused by emergency works to repair a collapsed water pipe.

Four-way traffic lights have been placed at the Bowls roundabout caused huge delays throughout Caerphilly on October 24 with reports of traffic jams stretching through Nantgarw and on to the A470.

In a statement on Facebook, Caerphilly County Borough Council said: “Welsh Water – emergency works – Bowls roundabout

“Contractors are carrying out emergency works to repair a collapsed pipe outside 3 Bowls Close, Penyrheol.

“Traffic management will be in place until, October 26.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council has been contacted for comment.

In a statement Welsh Water said the works had been “essential”.

It said: “Due to the position of the work we had to put traffic lights in place to keep our team and local motorists safe while we did the work.  Our contractors were on site yesterday and we are carrying out the reinstatement and traffic management lights will be removed this evening.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused thank people for their patience while we carried out this work.”
