A new reuse shop has opened its doors on Penallta Industrial Estate – saving household items which would otherwise end up in the recycling bin or in landfill.
The Penallta Reuse Shop has opened next to the Household Waste Recycling Centre and will sell reused goods for low prices.
The shop was opened by Caerphilly County Borough Council, in partnership with south Wales-based charity Wastesavers.
Currently, Wastesavers has nine Reuse Shops operating across south Wales, with Penallta being the first to open in Caerphilly County Borough.
The shop was officially opened by children from nearby primary schools, who were given a tour of the premises. The launch event also included a cost-of-living session, giving visitors a chance to speak with council staff about issues such as benefits, housing, debt and food support.
After the opening, council leader Sean Morgan said: “The Reuse Shop forms part of our extended offer to reduce, reuse, repair and recycle and is the next step in our journey to becoming a carbon neutral authority.
“Reuse also brings a number of social and economic benefits, such as offering shoppers the opportunity to find good quality items for great prices, which is now more important than ever.”
Alun Harries, charity manager at Wastesavers, said: “Last year our Reuse Shops throughout south Wales found new homes for over 416,000 items, which would have otherwise been sent to recycling skips.
“Reuse has enormous environmental benefits, and reusing household items saves even more energy – we should all have a facility and resource to do it.”
Mr Harries added: “As a charity we work towards a triple bottom line of environmental, social and economic sustainability. We work in partnership with local authorities and any profits that are made support our social inclusion and education programmes.”
The shop is located on South Road, Penallta Industrial Estate, CF82 7ST. It is open seven days a week between 9.30am and 4.30pm.
