Get your skates on at the roller rink in Bargoed this December

A roller skating rink has come to Bargoed town centre this Christmas.

Located in Morrison’s underground car park, people can come and get their skates on for £3 sessions which run for 30 minutes from 10am to 7pm.

The rink opened on December 7, and according to events officer, Stacy Francis, from Caerphilly County Borough Council, there have already been some happy skaters.

“We’ve had loads of really happy kids,” she said, adding that it’s a good way to get people out and about in Bargoed. “It does offer something different,” she said.

The event has been organised and funded by the county borough and Bargoed Town Council and has blended well into the town.  “It’s quite an urban feel,” said Stacy of the underground rink. “It really fits with the area,” she added.

Skates can be hired as part of the £3 entrance fee

The price of the roller rink is more reasonable compared to ice rinks which have previously been put up in December. This helps event planners and locals save money.

“It’s cheaper to have the roller rink,” said Stacy, adding that it’s also “more sustainable” and “reasonably priced” at £3 for 30 minutes, which includes skate hire.

There is also a DJ on hand to play tunes and people who want to skate can turn up on the day but are advised to turn up 30 minutes before the time slot they would like, to avoid disappointment.

On Friday, December 9 there is a ‘quiet’ session from 7pm to 7.30pm as the roller rink aims to be as inclusive as possible. “Not all children like loud music,” said Stacy.

After covid and now that the cost-of-living crisis is affecting people the rink is a big positive, according to Stacy. “It’s really good to see everyone out and about,” she said.

Group bookings of 30-50 people need to be booked in advance by contacting events@caerphilly.gov.uk and will receive a 10% discount.

On Saturday the roller rink will form part of the free Christmas Market, which will have entertainment, funfair rides and even a photo booth shaped like a snow globe.

The roller rink will run until this Sunday, December 11.
