A mysterious sinkhole that appeared in a field in Graig y Rhacca over the weekend is being investigated by the Coal Authority.

The sinkhole was first spotted on the morning of Saturday, January 14 in a field just off Addison Way, the main road leading in and out of the estate.

It is said to be around three metres in depth and around nine metres wide.

Zoe Rose-Higgins, head of public safety and subsidence at the Coal Authority, said the governmental body was made aware of the sinkhole on Monday and is working with Caerphilly County Borough Council to “make the ground safe and carry out thorough investigations to determine the cause”.

She continued: “If this incident was caused due to historical coal mine workings, we will design a permanent solution and carry out repair works as soon as we can.”

A council spokesperson said: “Our officers have been liaising with the Coal Authority as it falls under their responsibility. We understand that they are currently fencing off the area and taking action to reduce surface water to make it safe, whilst formulating plans for a permanent solution.”
