Trebanos 13-17 Bedwas, WRU National Championship

Bedwas saw off a late Trebanos push to seal their first win in nearly three months.

After three first half tries in a wet Swansea valley on Thursday February 2, Bedwas held on to come away with the points, despite a nervy last ten minutes.

Rhys Morgans opened the scoring for the visitors within the first five minutes to take a 5-0 lead, with James Dixon’s conversion attempt going wide.

Trebanos came back strongly and had the a lot of possession, but the Bedwas defence was in control and kept them out until mid way through the half, when a Kristian Jones penalty reduced the arrears to within a score.

As the rain fell and conditions deteriorated, both sides battled on with no further scores until five minutes before the break – with Bedwas’ second try coming in the shape of hooker Mike Dacey.

Dixon converted the kick to give Bedwas a nine-point lead.

That lead was built on again before the break, when a loose ball near the half-way line was pounced on by Aaron Billingham, who won the race to touch down in the corner.

Dixon was once again unsuccessful with the conversion from a narrow angle out wide, but Bedwas were certainly the happier side at the break with a 17-3 lead – just one try away from a bonus point.

The second half started brightly for Bedwas, but an interception from outside-half Sam Davies saw him sprint away for a Trebanos try. Jones scored the conversion to reduce Bedwas’ lead to seven points.

A chance to further eat into that lead went begging when Jones missed a penalty before the hour mark – but the hosts continued to enjoy the better of possession.

Another penalty kick soon came Jones’ way and he sent the ball through the posts to put Trebanos within a try of going ahead as the game entered the last five minutes.

It was backs to the wall for Bedwas as the home side continued to dominate possession and come very close to snatching the win, but Bedwas clung on for a much-needed victory.

The match marked prop Brynley Toms’ 150th appearance in the black and white of Bedwas. He was presented with a club tie after the game by the club’s Director of Rugby Gareth Arrowsmith.

The win sees Bedwas stay eighth in the table, with five wins and six defeats in 11 games.

Bedwas are back in action at 1pm on Saturday February 11, taking on Glamorgan Wanderers away from home.
