Further education colleges in Wales will get a share of £2.1m in funding over the next three years to improve the experiences of students with additional learning needs (ALN).

The Welsh Government funding will help colleges implement the ALN Act, which is being phased in over the next three years and replaces the existing Special Educational Needs (SEN) system.

Wales’ Education Minister, Jeremy Miles, said the funding “will lead to a real difference for young people and increase the opportunities and options available to them at their local college.”

Recently, Caerphilly’s Labour Senedd Member, Hefin David, called on the Welsh Government to do more to Welsh Government to do more to support ALN provision.

After visiting the Autistic Minds hub in Caerphilly town centre, Dr David said he wanted to see more money go towards supporting the transition between childhood and adulthood ALN support.

What is Autistic Minds?

Autistic Minds, which was previously known as the Autism Directory, opened its hub on Market Street, Caerphilly town centre in September 2020. As well as support groups and advice sessions for people with autism and their families, the hub offers support with job applications, social skills and more.

Welcoming the funding, Dr David said: “It is absolutely crucial to ensure that learners are getting the tailored support they need through their individual development plans. It will also encourage a stronger partnership between colleges and schools.”

He continued: “The transition between childhood and adulthood ALN support is far too fragmented and this funding will help join some of those puzzle pieces together.

“Work like this is very important in ensuring the success of the new ALN act and the adequate support for those who need it.”
