A Bedwas-based bakery with contracts to supply the Cheltenham Races, the Grand National and Wimbledon has grown thanks to council support.

Acorns Bakery, which was founded in Newport more than 20 years ago, moved to Bedwas House Industrial Estate in 2020.

The business, which provides food wholesalers and hospitality firms with fresh baked goods, contacted investment support officers at Caerphilly County Borough Council to seek support in April last year.

Its owner, Patrick Peachey, wanted to know if there was any support available for him to replace the existing ovens and freezer with new models that could cook and store more baked goods.

His business then applied for the council’s Caerphilly Enterprise Fund and was given a £10,000 grant – which helped protect the job’s of the company’s three employees and create an additional job there.

In September, the company again sought support from the council to press ahead with necessary flooring works – and received more than £4,600 from the UK Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which is administered by councils.

Cllr Jamie Pritchard, council cabinet member for Prosperity, Regeneration and Climate Change, said: “It’s great to see how this business has grown since moving to Caerphilly.

“The business has become an essential part of the supply chain in this industry, helping to support other local businesses in Caerphilly Borough and beyond.
