Newbridge RFC have won the Division One Cup after beating Nant Conwy 29-13 at the Principality Stadium.

In what has been a remarkable season for Newbridge, the club has secured promotion to the WRU National Championship in an unbeaten season, as well as a cup double following the win over Nant Conwy on Sunday April 23.

Speaking about the event in Cardiff, coach Jason Williams said: “The day flew by. It was a great occasion for everyone involved.

“We knew coming into the game it was going to be tough. They are a proper close side who play for each other. We started off a bit slow but scored well late on and deserved the win.

“The celebrations were fantastic and everyone got involved. I only got in myself [on Tuesday] morning.”

Paul Rogers, commercial director at the club, said: “It was a great day for us and the club. The boys played some brilliant stuff. There were a few nerves waiting for kick-off but they coped well.

“We were allocated 750 seats but there were a lot more fans there than that. The celebrations went on until 5am.

“I think the win was extra special because we had about ten boys who had come through our youth system which was great to see.”

Newbridge has ten sides across various age groups, and also hosts the Chargers Female Hub.

Despite their successful season in the Division One East, Newbridge are still yet to clinch the league title, but will do if they beat Brecon on Saturday April 29.

On the rest of the season, coach Williams said: “It’ll be tough to get the boys motivated for this one but it is a big game.

“We’ve got training tonight and I’m hoping it won’t be too flat.”
