Caerphilly County Borough Council has responded to claims that Risca Youth Centre could soon be demolished to make way for houses.
After residents in and around Risca recently came together to voice their concerns over the potential loss of the “superb” building, independent councillor for Risca West, Bob Owen, told Caerphilly Observer that a decision to flatten the building would be “criminal”.
In response to that claim, a council spokesperson said: “The council is aware of rumours circulating in the community about the future of the building and is keen to set the record straight.
“Earlier this year the council adopted a new youth service delivery model, that involves increased outreach youth work, blended with the more traditional approaches provided at youth centres.
“The withdrawal of the youth service from the Brooklands Youth Centre forms part of this new approach.”
The spokesperson continued: “The future of the building is being considered, but at present the site has not been formally classified as surplus to requirements by the youth service.
“Should this occur, the council will consider the best ongoing use of the building in relation to a range of competing needs from across the organisation and the wider community.”
The possible demolition is part of the council’s proposal to build around 100 new council homes in Rhymney, Risca, Trethomas, and Bargoed – to meet the “ever-increasing” housing need.
Cllr Owen added that he and other residents are “exploring options” and hope to turn the building into a community centre in the future.
