Mayor Mike Adams has attended the exhibition

Bargoed and District Arts Society is holding its annual exhibition at Llancaiach Fawr with an “eclectic” mix of art on display.

The exhibition is taking place at the 17th-century manor’s education centre until September 2.

Ron Cox, 77, who has been a member of the society for 35 years and is also an exhibition secretary, told Caerphilly Observer more about what’s on display.

“It’s basically the new work of artists who are members of society over the year,” said Ron, adding that there are 22 artists and 176 pieces on show.

He continued: “There’s a mix of style and technique,” adding that some artists have chosen to use traditional oil and watercolours whereas others have mounted their work on wood.

This is the second exhibition for the society since the pandemic, but the history of the event is much longer than that.

Ron continued: “We’ve held one [annually] since the 60s,” adding that anyone can come along to the free event where they’ll be invited to vote for their favourite piece.

The winner of the Hazel Water’s Memorial Plate is chosen by people from the Bedwellty Show

There are also other competitions that take place within the exhibition including the Withers Cup and the Hazel Water’s Memorial Plate where the winner is chosen by people from the Bedwellty Show.

Ron said: “It’s a window for our work,” but added that it’s also a chance for the society to encourage more members to join.

There are currently 26 members by Ron’s estimates – but they are always looking for more people to get involved and enjoy weekly workshops and a programme of professional artists who come and provide demonstrations.

While there is a charge that can be paid quarterly or annually, prospective new members can come along for a few sessions for free to see if they enjoy it.

Ron added: “We’d like more people to join.”

The group meets weekly at the education centre in Llancaiach Fawr on Tuesdays between 7pm and 9pm – except during school holidays.

The exhibition is open until September 2 from 10am to 4pm.
