Senghenydd inflicted a heavy defeat on Risca in League One East
Senghenydd inflicted a heavy defeat on Risca in League One East

Men’s rugby union clubs from across Caerphilly County Borough were back in action in the WRU Championship and National Leagues over the weekend.

In what was the second matchweek of the season, Bedwas, Cross Keys, and Newbridge secured wins in the WRU Championship East, but Bargoed and Penallta failed to build on their opening day victories.

Newly-promoted Newbridge made it two wins from two after beating Beddau 20-16 away from home, while Bedwas and Cross Keys both picked up their first wins of the season.

Bedwas narrowly beat Cardiff Met 20-19 away, while the Keys saw off Treorchy 34-17 at Pandy Park.

Bargoed however fell to a 28-17 defeat away at Ystrad Rhondda, while Penallta suffered a 43-17 loss at Rumney.

Dropping down a tier to League One East, Senghenydd overpowered Risca to record a 53-14 win away from home in an all-Caerphilly County Borough clash.

The division also yielded wins for Nelson, who beat Bedlinog 22-17 away, and Ynysddu, who earned a 35-12 win at Pontypool United.

Down in League Two East, Blackwood continued their winning start to the new campaign with a 24-19 win at Croesyceiliog, while Oakdale‘s winless run continues with a 39-24 home defeat to Usk.

Meanwhile, there was disappointment for Caerphilly, who lost 39-34 away to Penarth in League Two East Central.

A tier below in League Three East, there were two Caerphilly County Borough derbies over the weekend.

Fleur de Lis beat Abertysswg Falcons 25-12 at home, while Rhymney got their first win of the season following a convincing 38-12 win away to Machen.

There was also a big victory for Abercarn in the division, who won 58-0 against Llanhilleth.

Another all-borough derby took place in League Four East, with Crumlin claiming local bragging rights with a comprehensive 46-12 win away to New Tredegar.

Blackwood Stars had little to celebrate however, losing 47-14 away to Bettws, while Bedwellty were on the wrong end of a 26-12 scoreline at home to Newport Saracens.

Elsewhere in League Four East, Hafodyrynys‘ trip to Crickhowell was postponed, as was Pontllanfraith‘s visit to Hollybush in League Five East.

But there were wins for the Caerphilly sides in League Six East, as Deri opened their campaign following a bye with a 39-12 win at Old Tylerian.

Trinant were also amongst the winners, bouncing back from last weekend’s opening day loss to beat Girling 29-5 at home.
