Luke Evans with his 2023 BAFTA Cymru

Hollywood actor Luke Evans was quick to heap praise on others after his self-titled television special won a BAFTA Cymru award.

The star, who grew up in Aberbargoed, won an entertainment programme award for his BBC 2 musical special Luke Evans: Showtime!, broadcast on Christmas Day last year.

The 44-year-old actor, whose film credits include the live action remake of Beauty and the Beast and Fast and Furious 6, said he was “ecstatic” at the win.

He said: “This is an award that goes to all of us.

“You don’t just do this on your own, even though it was my name on that title. “It took an army to put it on that stage and everybody invested so much time and energy and passion – we knew what we wanted to do and we knew that we could bring that together.”

The 32nd BAFTA Cymru Awards were held at the ICC Wales in Newport on Sunday October 15, and were hosted by TV presenter Alex Jones.

Other winners on the night included Taron Egerton, who picked up his first BAFTA Cymru Award for Actor in Black Bird, while actor and producer Rakie Ayola was honoured with the prestigious Siân Phillips Award.
