Treowen Stars “legend” Steve Evans has been recognised as community coach of the year at the 2023 Caerphilly Sport Awards.

A football coach for 12 years, Evans has helped develop boys and girls across multiple age groups across several different clubs.

He has been a member of the Stars for the last nine years, having initially joined to coach his daughter before deciding to remain at the club, now helping out across all of the age groups.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about the award, Evans said: “I didn’t have a clue that I was even nominated.

“I had a letter through the door and saw that there was a free meal on offer, I never thought I’d actually win”, he joked.

The Caerphilly Sport Awards were held in Bryn Meadows Golf Club on Friday November 10, and celebrated the sporting achievements of sportspeople and clubs across Caerphilly County Borough.

Evans, who also coaches at Caerphilly and District School Football, continued: “I’m just a football coach, I do it because I love seeing the players develop as footballers but also as people. It’s very rewarding.

“It’s a great community to be involved in, and the awards were a great chance to catch-up with other coaches.”

The NHS worker said he continues to keep coaching, and joked “my wife wouldn’t let me stop – she likes the peace when I’m out of the house”, before adding: “Football is a great release and I wouldn’t swap it for anything.”

The club thanked ‘Evo’, and described him as “legend”, who has been an integral part of Treowen Stars.
