A speed camera in Trethomas remains switched-off following vandalism several months ago, but will capture motorists driving faster than 20mph when back on.

GoSafe, which is in charge of ‘fixed’ speed cameras across Wales, confirmed when asked by Caerphilly Observer, that the camera on Newport Road remains off.

The camera was vandalised with spray paint back in the summer.

Like most 30mph roads in Wales, Newport Road’s speed limit changed from 30mph to 20mph on September 17.

GoSafe staff were seen working on the camera at the start of November, but the organisation has said it is only “monitoring data”, with the work being done just routine maintenance checks.

In a statement, it said: “The stretch of road covered by the camera is now 20mph. We continue to monitor the data coming through but the camera is not currently being used to prosecute motorists.

“Where a speed limit has changed from 30mph to 20mph and there is a fixed camera within the stretch of road, we will be monitoring the data and will recommence enforcement where there is evidence of risk to road users.”
