While no Caerphilly County Borough teams were in action in the WRU National Championship on Saturday December 30, Ynysddu‘s quest to earn promotion into the second tier was dealt a boost.
They earned a 19-18 win at Monmouth in League One East to remain in the promotion spots as 2023 drew to a close.
Senghenydd meanwhile ended the year on a low, falling 17-7 at Abergavenny to drop to seventh.
Down in League Two East, struggling Oakdale sprung a surprise on their high-flying neighbours Blackwood RFC – winning 22-17.
However, their second win of the season wasn’t enough to move them off bottom place, while Blackwood remain second.
Over in League Two East Central, Caerphilly hammered Llantrisant 55-0 at Virginia Park.
Meanwhile, Abercarn finished the year at the top of the tree in League Three East, following a 35-15 win at RTB Ebbw Vale.
However, Machen‘s year ended with a 35-11 loss at home to Nantyglo, while an Upper Rhymney Valley derby between Abertysswg Falcons and Rhymney was postponed.
Down in League Four East, Bedwellty secured a 17-13 win at Whiteheads to stay sixth in the table.
However, there was little success for the other borough sides in that division. Winless New Tredegar lost 37-13 at Gwernyfed, while struggling Blackwood Stars lost 22-0 at Crickhowell.
Third-placed Crumlin were denied the chance to bolster their promotion push after their trip to Bettws was postponed, while Hafodyrynys‘ visit to Newport Saracens was also called off.
Over in League Five East, Hollybush‘s clash with West Mon was also off, as were the League Six East fixtures between Deri and Tredegar Ironsides, and Trinant and Hartridge.
