Rugby round-up: Big wins for Penallta and Cross Keys as Bargoed reach cup semi-finals

Caerphilly County Borough sides were in league and cup action on Saturday January 27

There were big wins for Penallta and Cross Keys in the WRU National Championship East over the weekend.

Penallta, who are second from bottom in the table, crushed the one team below them, Treorchy, 73-18.

The Keys meanwhile have moved up to sixth in the table after a resounding 55-19 win away to St Peters.

However, Newbridge remain fifth after falling 29-17 at Glamorgan Wanderers.

Bargoed were not in league action on the weekend – instead beating Llangennech 23-16 in the WRU Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Meawhile, Ynysddu‘s promotion bid in League One East suffered a setback with a 34-26 loss at Nelson, who move up to fourth in the table.

At the other end of the division, bottom-placed Risca lost 40-27 at home to Monmouth, while Senghenydd stay eighth following a 17-13 home defeat to Brynmawr.

Down in League Two East, Oakdale were held to a 27-27 draw at home to Pill Harriers, while Caerphilly beat Llantwit Fardre 35-28 in League Two East Central.

Over in League Three East, Machen moved up to fifth following a resounding 46-12 win over third-place Fleur de Lys, while league leaders Abercarn beat Chepstow 16-14.

However, Rhymney‘s trip to Blaina was postponed, as was Abertysswg Falcons‘ visit to Nantyglo.

In League Four East, Crumlin‘s promotion charge continued with a 36-21 derby win at lowly Hafodyrynys.

However, there were defeats for Blackwood Stars, who narrowly lost 36-33 away to Whiteheads, while Bedwellty were beaten 26-14 at home to Gwernyfed.

New Tredegar‘s trip to Bettws was called off, as was Hollybush‘s League Five East clash with Abersychan Alexanders.

Meanwhile, Trinant are up to fourth in League Six East following a 65-0 drubbing of Caerphilly County Borough rivals Cwmcarn United, who stay second from bottom in eighth.
