Fochriw’s football pitch has been renamed to honour a village resident who “embodied the spirit of community”.

The field, now known as the Glyn Davies Memorial Ground, was renamed after Mr Davies to honour his dedication to the game locally.

Mr Davies, who passed away in October 2023, dedicated 40 years to the sport, and was involved with Fochriw AFC.

He also helped to organise Fochriw Social Club’s “Stars in their Eyes” charity shows, raising substantial funds for meaningful causes over the years.

Jayne Davies, Mr Davies’ granddaughter, told Caerphilly Observer how much the honour meant to the family and said: “We as a family are so proud.

“He would make me slow down every time we passed the field and call it ‘the best pitch in south Wales’ so for it now to be officially named after him has made us all extremely proud and very emotional.”

Jayne added that the family are grateful to the former players, Simon Farr and Mark Pullen, who played under Mr Davies and led the renaming of the pitch in his memory.

Labour councillor Robert Chapman, who represents the Darran Valley ward on Caerphilly County Borough Council, said: “Glyn Davies embodied the spirit of community through his unwavering dedication to local football in Fochriw and heartfelt charity endeavours.

“Renaming the football pitch in his memory is fitting to a man whose legacy continues to inspire and unite us all.”
