Aldi is looking to build a new supermarket on the site of the Co-operative Food store in Nelson.
The German supermarket chain is submitting a planning application to open a new store on Mafon Road, replacing the existing Co-op.
The new “modern” Aldi would be built further back from the road, the company has said.
The £7m investment will create up to 40 new jobs, with all staff at the existing Co-op being invited to interview for roles at the new store, according to Aldi.
Plans also include 115 car parking spaces, with four electrical vehicle charging points and bike storage.
Rob Jones, real estate director at Aldi, said the supermarket has “long had an ambition to establish a food store in the region”.

He continued: “The new store will regenerate the site, which is currently occupied by the Co-op. Aldi understands the current Co-op is an important part of the community, and intends to carry on playing an important role within the community.
“For that very reason, all existing Co-op staff members have been offered the opportunity to interview with Aldi.”
If it opens, it would become the fourth Aldi store in Caerphilly County Borough, with stores in Blackwood, Caerphilly, and Tir y Berth.
A public consultation on the plans was launched on Thursday February 29, and will run until March 28.
A spokesperson for the Co-operative Group said no date has been set for the store’s closure, but said it will “continue to serve the community until a planning decision is made”.
