The event will take place in New Tredegar on March 12

An event has been arranged to commemorate 40 years since the Miners’ Strike.

The day-long event will take place at the Whiterose Resource Centre in New Tredegar on March 12.

This marks the date in 1984 when the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) declared a national strike in opposition to the pit closures.

The strike lasted more than 11 months and involved around three-quarters of the country’s miners.

The event is open to everyone, with ex-miners and their families in particular encouraged to attend.

Dean Dauncey, manager of the Whiterose Centre, said: “We will have a fantastic display of old photos from the time displayed throughout the centre for people to look at at their leisure and share their knowledge.

“This is a fantastic chance for old friendships to reunite and new ones to form over what was a momentous event for Wales.”

There will also be entertainment, including the Whiterose Primary School choir, Ystrad Mynach Male Voice Choir, and a mini band.

The Winding Engine in the soon-to-be mothballed Winding House Museum will also run as part of the day’s activities.

The event is free and will run from 11am.
