Pupils at Studio 54 in Blackwood have danced at Disneyland Paris and Alton Towers, and are now set to perform at the O2 in London before the world championships in Blackpool later this year.

Opened by Jenna Curtis seven years ago, the High Street-based now has more than 120 dancers across multiple age groups, performing musical theatre and hip-hop style dances.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Jenna said: “We’ve grown really quickly over the last few years, and have been able to give kids experiences they’ll never forget.

“I have some pupils now who have been here from the start and it’s been great to watch them grow as people and performers.”

Gem Astley is a mother of two dancers at the club, and echoed what Ms Curtis had to say about experiences her children have had: “My kids Eddie and Gracie have been going for five years now and they love it.

“They qualified to perform on the main stage at Disneyland and it’s all they speak about. It’s also a very diverse space with boys and girls performing which is great.”

Although creating memories is at the heart of Studio 54, since head coach Omyx Uwandulu joined to teach hip-hop, the club has become a force in the competitive side of dance.

Jenna explained: “We took seven to the world championships last year and managed to get a second-place. We’re taking 22 to Blackpool in August so we’re hoping for a winner there.

“We’re then performing in the National Entertainment Awards in the O2 in November which will be a great experience too.”
