A primary school in Oakdale has received glowing praise from education watchdog Estyn following an inspection.

Rhiw Syr Dafydd Primary School has been described by Estyn as an environment where “wellbeing and safeguarding of pupils and staff is a priority”.

Following its inspection in February this year, Estyn’s report said senior leaders and staff “work collaboratively to improve the quality of teaching and learning experiences and to ensure that pupils make progress”.

Other strengths, such as inclusivity and providing opportunities to take part in physical activity, were also highlighted in the report.

The report added that headteacher Craig George provides “clear strategic direction for school improvement”, adding: “He has a clear ambition for the school to focus closely on pupils’ wellbeing and on ensuring high expectations for what pupils learn and achieve”.

Estyn did note ‘inconsistencies’ to the school’s approach to promoting healthy eating and drinking, but said it plans to address these.

Other points of improvement were that currently pupils have “limited opportunities” to improve their work, and recommended a greater push towards independent learning.
