AFC Pontymister will play Marshfield AFC this Saturday

AFC Pontymister are set to travel to Abergavenny this weekend with hopes of lifting the Gwent County Amateur Cup.

After an indifferent Gwent Division One campaign, where they finished 10th of 15, Pontymister are a win against Marshfield AFC away from lifting silverware.

Pontymister, who play at Longbridge Fields in Risca, have struggled to build momentum due to bad weather according to first team coach Jason Vassel, who spoke to Caerphilly Observer: “We were on a promotion charge at one stage but the rain really stopped us in our tracks.

“We’ve not come into this final with the best form having lost our last five, but we’ve been missing a few lads who should be there on Saturday.”

The final will be held Pen y Pound Stadium in Abergavenny, with kick-off expected at 2.30pm.

Vassel continued: “We have a few sponsors and two coaches going up with around 100 people and more going up in cars. It should be a good day.”

Asked about their opposition, Marshfield AFC, Vassel said: “Me and manager Brendan Scott went to watch their last game but it’s difficult to say what they’re like and how they play. We’ll see on the day.”
