Caerphilly Art Societies’ annual exhibition in the Twyn Community Centre is currently underway, with more than 80 pieces of art on display from local artists.

Founded in 1976, the aim of the society is to “encourage and inspire” artists, according to exhibition secretary Danny Thomas.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Mr Thomas said: “We have around 30 members at the society and we meet twice a month to host demonstrations and workshops led by professional artists.

“We have one exhibition a year and I myself have been showing for ten. It’s a very good standard on show this year with plenty of variety. We’ve also had a good steady flow of people in and out.”

Whilst some artists show for fun, with the option to buy some pieces, others entered a competition held at the community centre.

Mr Thomas explained: “We always have a competition, and the theme this year was to copy the style of your favourite artist.

“We had a good crowd here last night when fellow artist Andrew Coslett came to pick the winner, and I’m rather embarrassed to say he picked mine.”

Inspired by French impressionist Edgar Degas, Mr Thomas said how his pastel piece took around a month to complete.

“We all try various methods after one of the workshops. The pros make it look easy but you soon find out it’s quite difficult.”

The exhibition is free to the public, and can be viewed at the Twyn Community Centre, Caerphilly, between 10.30am until 3pm Wednesday (today) until Friday, and 10.30am until 1pm Saturday.

More information on joining the society can be found on social media, or by email at: caerphillyart@gmail.com
