The son of former Wales international Rob Earnshaw has joined Manchester United.

Silva Mexes Tyler-Earnshaw, known as Silva Mexes has joined the Red Devils academy from Ipswich Town.

United reportedly pipped other top English clubs to secure the signing of the Wales under-14s star.

Announcing the move on Instagram, Mexes said: “Very proud moment for me and my family to announce my signing for Manchester United.

“Thank you to everyone who has helped me on my journey so far. The work starts now.”

His father, Earnshaw, posted on Twitter: “I am so so proud. He has worked hard and it’s such a blessing to see him find his passion and make this journey.”

Earnshaw, 43, was born in Zambia, but moved to Wales as a child, settling in Bedwas and later Lansbury Park, Caerphilly.

He attended St Helen’s Primary School and later Cardinal Newman Catholic School in Rhydyfelin.

As a youngster, Earnshaw played for Llanbradach AFC, before moving to play for Treforest-based GE Wales.

He came through the ranks at Cardiff City, making 202 appearances for the Bluebirds over two spells, scoring 89 goals.

He also played for West Bromwich Albion, Greenock Morton, Norwich City, Derby County, Nottingham Forest, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Toronto, Blackpool, Chicago Fire, and Vancouver Whitecaps during a 17-year playing career.

He made his international debut for Wales in 2002, and went on to make 59 caps – scoring 16 goals.
