Crosskeys are the current Monmouthshire Bowling Association champions
Pontymister Athletic claimed a narrow victory over Bedwas and Trethomas

In a true nailbiter, Pontymister Athletic Bowls Club managed to steal all the points from Bedwas and Trethomas in a Monmouthshire Bowling League match.

The Mister Men hosted high-flying Bedwas at Fields Road on Saturday June 22, prepared for a tough game against a side who’d recently beaten table-topping Crosskeys.

Bedwas took an early four shot leader after five ends with Pontymister trailing three shots at the halfway point.

After a thrilling finish which almost went down to the last bowl, the home team just about prevailed and won 73-71.

Report

Rink two saw skipper Andrew Goodwyn shaking his head on many occasions. Together with lead Sean Kenvyn, late replacement Jason Bradshaw and the experienced Graham Smith, they faced the talented four from Bedwas of M.Smith,  P.Jones,  P.Morgan and Jeremy Griffith.

Leading from the start, the away team built a good lead, but a brilliant six from the home team brought things level after 13 ends and set up what was to be an epic finish.

Onto the rink came captain Lloyd Turnbull and after a five minute discussion with Goodwyn, he conceded his bowl and the rink was tied, but the game won for the hosts.

Rink three saw Dai Bowd, Sid Phillips, captain Lloyd Turnbull and the “Rocket” Ronnie Morgan take on J.Minty, M.Griffith, M.Alderwith and AJ Griffith.

The Mister Men trailed in the first-half of the game, but with some fine shots and sheer aggression they stormed into the lead and held on by six shots to win 21-15.

Finally on rink five there was another tough test for the hosts, who eventually managed to come out as 22-12 winners after a late surge from Bedwas and Trethomas.

That narrow win puts Pontymister three points from bottom on 35 points.
