Machen Cricket Club were looking for a much needed win against Lisvane

It was another tough weekend for Caerphilly County Borough’s cricket sides as the season edges towards the halfway stage.

There was good news in division two for Blackwood Town however, who came into the weekend looking for their first win.

They matched-up against a Brecon side who were also struggling this season, with hosts Blackwood fielding first.

Brecon set a solid score of 206 for Blackwood to chase. The hosts met the total with plenty of wickets to spare, but just before running out of overs.

Blackwood still sit bottom after that win, but it could be an important win to help build momentum.

Newbridge had a very difficult match against top of the table Croesyceiliog, who batted first and set a very good total of 256.

The hosts made a decent attempt of the chase, but fell 44 runs short for a total of 212. Newbridge sit sixth after that loss.

In division three, Machen were looking for a bounce back win at home to Lisvane.

Machen batted first and set a great score of 258 for the visitors to chase. Lisvane very nearly met the total, but fell just 12 runs short giving Machen the win.

It was an afternoon to forget for Crumlin, who hosted a very strong Pontypridd side who are pushing for promotion.

The visitors batted first and set a huge total of 296 for Crumlin to try and hunt down. It was a pretty poor attempt from the hosts, who could only muster-up 75 runs; all out inside 23 overs.

Crumlin sit one from bottom whilst Machen move-up into fifth.

Down in division four, the match between Monkswood and Pontymister and Crosskeys was postponed.

The match between Malpas and Abercarn in division seven was played however, with Abercarn batting first and setting a whopping 248.

Malpas, who sit second in the table, managed the chase brilliantly, winning by three wickets after reaching 250 runs inside 36 overs.

Finally in division ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer faced Creigiau on the road, looking to pick-up only their second win of the season.

Cefn Fforest batted first and set a manageable total of 214 for the hosts to catch. Creigiau eventually caught the visitors inside 38 overs with four wickets remaining.

That loss keeps Cefn Fforest one from bottom with lots of work to do this season.
