Machen picked-up some crucial points with a win on the road

It was a mixed bag of results for Caerphilly-based sides across the weekend, with the South East Wales Cricket League entering the business end of the season.

Starting in division two, Newbridge Cricket Club were looking to return to winning ways at home against a good Cardiff side.

Newbridge batted first and set the visitors a solid run total of 227. Cardiff came mightily close, but ran out of overs just 13 runs short.

That win puts Newbridge in sixth and right behind those above them.

After a break last weekend, Blackwood Town were hoping to get just their second win of the season, up against Newport Fugitives.

Hosts Newport batted first and set a huge total of 296 for Blackwood to chase. The visitors couldn’t get near, ultimately losing by 118 runs.

Blackwood remain bottom of the division after that one, and are in real risk of going down.

In division three, Machen made it two wins in a row, this time on the road against a strong Creigiau side.

Creigiau batted first and set a manageable total of 216 for the visitors to chase down.

Machen just about managed the total with two wickets to spare. They sit sixth after that result.

There was disappointment elsewhere for Crumlin who opened the batting against Miskin Manor.

Setting a pretty low score of 150, Miskin manged the chase comfortably enough, ultimately winning by six wickets.

Crumlin sit seventh after that loss.

In division four, there was better news for Pontymister and Crosskeys up against Whitchurch Heath.

Pontymister batted first and led the visitors by 232 runs after 40 overs. Whitchurch could only manage 118 before being skittled out after 26 overs.

There was bad news in division seven, with Abercarn at home against St Fagans.

The visitors batted first and set a healthy total of 246 for Abercarn to have a go at. The hosts weren’t up for the task however, and fell 58 runs short.

Abercarn are eighth on three wins after that result.

Finally in division ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer were up against Sully Spartans, looking for just their third win of the season.

Spartans batted first and set a solid score of 294 for the hosts to chase. Cefn Fforest couldn’t manage the chase, losing by 70 runs and remaining eighth in the division.
