Machen Cricket Club hosted top of the league Radyr on Saturday August 17

With only a few games remaining in the South East Wales Cricket League season, the pressure told as several Caerphilly sides slipped-up.

In division two however, it was a great Saturday afternoon for Newbridge who travelled to St Fagans, looking to push higher-up the table.

Batting first, the visitors set a very healthy total of 277 for the hosts to chase. They fell 72 runs short and Newbridge moved-up into fourth spot.

Blackwood Town had a bit of a ‘six pointer’ up against Rogerstone Welfare, who are also lingering at the bottom of the table.

Rogerstone opened the batting and set a challenging total of 296 for the hosts, who could get nowhere near at 117, all out after 33 overs.

Blackwood sit one from bottom in the table.

Meanwhile in division three, it was an afternoon to forget for Crumlin, who batted first and managed just 65 runs against Creigiau.

The hosts barely broke sweat meeting that total, and won by nine wickets.

It was a tough day for Machen too, up-against table topping Radyr.

Machen batted first and clocked-up 214 runs for the visitors to chase. Radyr just about surpassed that total with a few overs to go, leaving Machen in sixth just ahead of Crumlin.

There was better news in division four as Pontymister and Crosskeys welcomed Barry Athletic.

The hosts were always favourite against bottom of the table Barry, but they opened the batting with a score of 242 and manged the game out well, eventually winning by 92 runs.

They move-up into fifth after that victory.

There was more good news in division seven as Abercarn faced a solid Llantwit Fadre side on the road.

In an absolute nail biter, Abercarn’s total of 128 was somehow enough, as Llantwit fell one run short after the full 40 overs. A very important win for the visitors who are now eighth.

Finally down in division ten, Cefn Fforest and Maesycwmmer had a testing match at home against GWR.

The visitors batted first and set a total of 192. Cefn Fforest could only manage 100 runs inside 36 overs before losing all their wickets. They sit in eighth spot.
