Allan Morgan, from Trethomas, has been crowned Welsh Masters champion after him and his teammates beat England in the final of a recent home nations event.

The 45-year-old, whose birthday is tomorrow (August 20), first picked-up a cue when he was 14, playing in local Welsh tournaments most of his life until finally breaking through earlier this month.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, Morgan said: “I stopped playing for seven years or so when my son started playing rugby on a Sunday, the same day tournaments were on.

“I got back into it at the over 40s section a few years ago and although Covid put a stop to things briefly, I finally managed to place high enough in a few ranking events through the season to make the final eight who were selected for Wales.”

Morgan, who practices at Caerphilly Conservative Club, said it was a “huge honour” to represent his country, and was selected for the ‘A’ team alongside former World Championship semi-finalist, Darren Morgan, and two others.

“The format was one match where we each played three frames. I played 14 frames in total and won 11 so I felt like I pulled my weight.”

After beating their ‘B’ team in the semi-final at the event in Leeds, Wales faced tournament favourites England in the final.

“We beat England 7-2 in the final which was a great feeling. I was a bit nervous at first but settled nicely and we were all pleased with the result.”

Hoping to kick-on now, Morgan has a tournament in Portugal later this year, and is looking for sponsorship to help cover the cost.

He continued: “It’s a lot of money as the tournament in 16 days and you have to book flights, hotel, etc. Any help would be great.”
