Trethomas Bluebirds are looking to extend their perfect run in the Cymru South as they prepare to welcome second place Trefelin BGC to the Centre for Sporting Excellence.

Their match tomorrow night (Friday August 23), is poised to be yet another tester for manager Mark Dunford’s Bluebirds, who’ve claimed fairly comprehensive victories in all four of their league matches.

The Bluebirds are of course experiencing their first season in the second tier of Welsh football, but you’d hardly notice given how seamless that transition has been; conceding just two goals and scoring ten.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about the season so far, Dunford said: “We have to look back and say it has been unexpected to say the least.

“All we could do coming into this season is look at ourselves and focus on the things we could control and see where it took us.

“We’ve been excellent at times but have also had to sit in and defend, not something we had to do much of last season.

“If you told me a few months ago we’d be sat top having won every game and have a plus eight goal difference I’d think you were mad.”

The Bluebirds have done plenty of homework heading into each game however, something that Dunford said had “stepped-up” since winning the league last season.

One man they may need to prepare for tomorrow night is Swansea City cult hero Lee Trundle, who at the age of 47 is still causing problems for sides with three goals this season.

“He’s obviously someone who still has plenty of ability and will catch the eye, but Trefelin are a side full of quality and threats.

“We’ve gone through the game plan with the boys in training and we’re excited to test ourselves in front of what will hopefully be a good crowd.”

Dunford went on to say his squad is looking in “good shape” ahead of the match, but does have to contend with a pretty sharp turnaround as his side faces Caerau Ely in a league match on Monday night.

One player who definitely won’t be featuring is goalkeeper Cameron Clarke, who has left the Bluebirds to join fellow Cymru South side Pontypridd United.

On Clarke’s departure, who only joined in the summer from Goytre AFC Dunford said: “He had an opportunity to play regular first team football and I wish him well. He’s a top keeper who was a true professional whilst at the club.”
