Cascade Ladies grabbed a last-minute winner against Llanelli Town Ladies in their opening home match of the season.

In a Genero Adran Trophy match, Cascade were looking for their first win of the season on Sunday September 8 at the Centre for Sporting Excellence, Ystrad Mynach.

It was a tight match throughout, with neither side really creating many chances. It took until the final minute for Cascade to take the lead, and points, thanks to a Megan Waite winner.

Kick-off

With the weather threatening, it was the visitors who had to weather the initial storm, as Cascade pushed high-up the pitch.

The midfield pairing of veteran Mia Kemp and former Cardiff City player Megan Waite saw plenty of the ball early on, and played some nice passes into the wide areas.

It was Waite, who was part of the side who beat Cascade in the Hugh James cup final to end last season, who had the first chance of the match. She headed over from a cross however.

After ten minutes or so of being parked in their own box, Llanelli had their first half-chance when a ball in behind was chased down by Nadia Phillips.

Phillips was second best to goalkeeper Bethan Connolly, who was off her line smartly. She was clattered for her efforts though and remained down for a few moments.

With the rain now pouring, Cascade captain Katie Davies was fired-up as she went into a few big tackles. There was a war of words between herself and Phillips which the referee had to get a hold of.

Cascade continued to be the side on top. Without creating any chances, they still posed lots of questions.

With Philips now on a yellow card due to her earlier antics, the Llanelli manger made a wise decision to substitute her before the half-time whistle, which came soon after.

Second-half

Similar to the start of the first-half, it was Cascade who were comfortably on top and looked the better side.

Again though, no real chances were created other than a few hopeful long shots. It was a game poised for a counter attack if the hosts weren’t careful.

There was a half-chance from the Reds, Stacey Webber with a shot from a narrow angle. It was slashed into the side netting though.

With the game once again becoming scrappy, this favoured the visitors who soon had another chance to take the lead.

It was Webber again, this time in the box with only the keeper to beat. She put it straight at Connolly however, who saved well.

The game became more open at this point, with Cascade hitting the woodwork after a cross was cleared behind onto the bar by a Llanelli player.

Chrystalla Moreton probably had the best chance for the hosts; a free header at the back post was put over.

The substitution of Olivia Townsend was a pleasure to watch from the sidelines. She was excellent down the left wing and bested several players regularly before delivering some nice crosses.

With the pressure mounting on Llanelli, Cascade had one last chance with a free-kick on the edge of the area.

Davies stepped-up and curled a beautiful ball in, which was claimed by Waite who wheeled away in celebration. A great way to win any match.
