Rudry resident Marina Davies is celebrating her 82nd birthday today in high-flying fashion.

To mark the occasion, Marina has travelled to Rendcomb Airfield in Cirencester ( on Tuesday September 10), where she will be doing a wingwalk to raise money for charity.

During the wingwalk, Marina will be stood upright, strapped to the top wing of a 1940 Stearsman biplane as it flies into the air.

The adrenaline-fuelled mission will be to raise money for the Royal Air Force (RAF) Association, which supports members of the RAF community – a cause close to Marina’s heart due to her family links with the RAF.

Ahead of the fundraiser, Marina has raised more than £1,000, which will help support the many welfare projects funded by the charity.

It’s not the first daring task Marina has done to raise money for charity. For her 80th birthday, she did a parachute jump to raise money for the Royal Marines in memory of her “uncle Charlie” who was one of the first onto the beaches during the Normandy landings.

Speaking about her latest challenge, which is set to start at around noon, Marina told Caerphilly Observer: “I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be a nice day hopefully – I’ve been told to wrap up warm as it’ll be cold up there with all the wind.

“The money this brings in will go to so many good causes.”

Marina will be supported on the day by her husband Michael, as well as her daughter – herself an RAF veteran – and grandsons, with a family lunch planned after the challenge is complete.

Talking about the reaction to Marina’s challenge, Michael said: “We have an over-55s lunch at Rudry Parish Hall once a month, and this week we had a quiz all about aeroplanes to celebrate it.

“The volunteers there even made a cake to celebrate.”
