Trethomas Bluebirds players celebrating their shock victory over Haverfordwest County
Trethomas Bluebirds famously beat Haverfordwest 2-1 two years ago

In an unlikely rematch, Trethomas Bluebirds prepare to head west where they’ll face Cymru Premier side Haverfordwest County in round two of the Welsh Cup.

The pair famously met in this very competition two years ago, when the then Ardal South East Trethomas Bluebirds pulled-off the most unlikely of upsets with a 2-1 win at the Centre of Sporting Excellence.

Despite being one division closer, Trethomas still come into the match as underdogs, with manager Mark Dunford fully expecting to be up against it.

Speaking to Caerphilly Observer, he said: “It’s set to be another huge day for the club. It wasn’t so long ago where these type of fixtures were seen as once in a lifetime; now we’re going to play two top tier sides in one season.”

Bluebirds beaten by top tier Barry Town in third round cup tie

Asked about that crazy 2-1 win over Haverfordwest a few seasons ago, Dunford said: “It was an amazing night. The word I used in the dressing room before the match was belief.

“We’re going to need belief again Saturday up against a side who’ve only improved since we last met, they’re a top team on a brilliant run of form.”

The west Wales side have won four of their last six league games, and find themselves second in the top tier of Welsh football.

The Bluebirds have had a great start to the season themselves. In their debut Cymru South season, Dunford’s side find themselves top of the league after 11 games.

He continued: “I think the best thing about tomorrow will be the occasion itself; we have the 16s coming down on the bus to watch, and the club has great links to Haverfordwest through Adam Raymond, Bobby Briers, and of course Derek Brazil who used to manage them.”

Dunford added how he hasn’t got a full strength squad to choose from tomorrow, with some suspended and other players injured.

Due to ongoing work at Haverfordwest’s stadium, the match is set to be played in Carmarthen on Saturday October 19, with kick-off at 2pm.
