Nant y Calch Allotment Society is appealing for new members

An allotment society is looking for new members, ranging from experienced gardeners to novice growers.

Nant y Calch allotments, in Caerphilly, has a number of vacant plots due to long-standing members looking to reduce the size of their allotments.

In total, there are 36 plots on the site, near Caerphilly railway station, tended to by a mix of gardeners, including single people, young families, those in work, retirees and more.

Chris O’Meara, a member of the allotment society, said: “We range from ‘ace’ vegetable growers to those with little experience but an enthusiasm for growing fresh fruit, flowers and vegetables.

“It’s a friendly site, and most plot holders are willing to share their knowledge, and often spare plants, with those with less experience.

“It’s a good place to make new friends too. Dave, one of our ‘seniors’, is an ace gardener whose produce is the envy of the rest of the site. He wants to reduce the size of his plot to keep it manageable.”

With autumn the ideal time to take on a plot, the allotment society is offering smaller ‘starter plots’ for beginners, with new plot holders granted a one-year probationary tenancy.

Anyone interested in a plot can contact Linda on 07725 400006 or Peter on 07767 203290.
