The club finished fourth amongst the Welsh team

Eight fighters from WCKA Kickboxing have returned home victorious from the world championships in Greece.

The club, which has a base in Trecenydd Community Centre, was formed in 1986, and has been run by 5th degree black belt Steve Bevan since 2002.

This year, WCKA were fortunate enough to take eight fighters aged between eight and 18 to the kickboxing world championships in Rhodes, Greece.

Even more fortunate than that, all eight fighters managed to bring home at least a medal. Speaking to Caerphilly Observer about their success, Mr Bevan said: “I’m very proud of everyone. As a club, we managed to finish fourth in Wales.

“The tournament itself was across seven days, and we also had a nice two days rest to enjoy Greece and relax a bit.

“I’d like to thank Ruby and Kane who helped me, and of course Emir, Lawson, Logan, Ruben, Jac, Oscar, Ife, and Cairon who all performed brilliantly.”

Mr Bevan went on to say how well the club is doing more generally, boasting more than 200 members across both its Caerphilly and Merthyr bases: “We offer varieties of kickboxing which every member can take part in.

“We have several tournaments throughout the year with the worlds being the big one. We are self-funded though so a lot of the year is spent raising money however we can.

“We’ve always got to keep going and preparations for the championships in Germany next year have already begun.”

Before that though, the club has two tournaments coming up, one in Nottingham on November 24, and another in Liverpool on December 8.
