The former Troed y Bryn Surgery, in Penyrheol, could be converted into housing.

Plans submitted to Caerphilly County Borough Council propose changing the use of the former surgery, which closed down in 2020, into three one-bedroom and one two-bedroom apartments.

Edwards and Sons Developments Ltd, from Bedwas, is behind the proposal for the site.

According to a planning statement, submitted by agents CLC Construction Consultants Ltd, converting the former surgery to business use is “unviable” due to related costs and a “lack of demand for commercial property at this location”.

“It is considered that conversion to residential use is the most appropriate for this building,” the agents added. “It is surrounded by residential properties and its location is fully sustainable not just with [the] availability of local shopping, but two bus routes serve the locality.”

They also said the redevelopment of the old surgery would “provide much needed low occupancy, residential accommodation”.

Troed y Bryn was one of two medical facilities in Caerphilly – along with Lansbury Park Surgery – which closed down in April 2020, reportedly after the health board was unable to find another GP to take over the practices following the retirement of the doctor in post.

Together, the two surgeries looked after nearly 4,000 patients, who were subsequently reregistered with other practices from that May.

The application for the change of use of Troed y Bryn Surgery is currently out for consultation, and can be viewed on the Caerphilly County Borough Council website under reference 24/0772/COU.
